The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, targets the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and undermines the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
