Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Officials reported that the massive storm triggered extensive sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of millions of people across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing tropical storms stronger and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Scientists report that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms cause approximately millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency on Thursday due to the extensive devastation caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
