Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People buying these drugs must be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through dieting usually experience a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened regain.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a intense return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural management.
