An Compassion of Strangers: How a Gentleman I Barely Knew Assisted Me Obtain the Role That Transformed My Existence

In the late 1980s, I was beginning a budget travel adventure to Europe with a companion. Because my companion was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had booked a two-week stay there on the way to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a sizeable ten-floor structure on the UWS called International House. After dropping our bags, we headed straight to the dining hall, where we got some food, took a seat, and started talking to people eating there.

Sitting next to me was an gentleman from Iraq studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I did for a living, and I explained that I had just graduated with a science degree and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an microscopy facility at the institution – right next door to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I consider applying for a role with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, returning to the canteen that evening. The man from Iraq came up to me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Since he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately explained to my host that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

In typical New York fashion – a city where everything seems achievable – she responded: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for a trio of years. One of the benefits was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his identity, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the courage or nerve to reach out at an prestigious college and seek a position. And, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that free tuition.

Critically, that gig at Columbia led me to a role in Europe where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
